Beautiful waterfront accommodation for 6
Harbour House is one of a row of colourful 19th century houses situated right on Portree’s historic harbour. There are fabulous sea views from all front facing rooms and you can make the most of the location with your own private ‘sitting out’ space on the water’s edge or wander up to sample the restaurants and cafes of Portree that are just a stone’s throw away.
A house with history
The house was built in 1839 and sits on the quay designed by celebrated Scottish engineer Thomas Telford in a location known by photographers the world over as one of Skye’s most famous scenes. Originally described as ‘neatly furnished and well adapted for respectable families’, one of the first occupants was Captain John MacKenzie, who sailed the Hebridean seas as well as further afield. Today you can while away the hours looking of the windows at life on the harbour – the fishing boats as they bring in their catch, the yachts which moor up overnight or the odd inquisitive seal or two.
In spite of its popular location, the house is remarkably quiet, being on the calm, largely traffic-free side of the harbour and come nightfall all you tend to hear is the sound of the water and the ship’s masts clinking in the breeze.
Perfect for families and friends
Today you’ll find that a hint of Harbour House’s maritime past continues with a carefully chosen mix of vintage and contemporary furniture, lovingly chosen to help you feel at home. And just to make your stay that little bit special, you’ll find beautiful Arran Aromatic toiletries, top quality bed linen, lots of games, maps, books and DVDs, woollen throws for winter evenings and hopefully everything you will need to help you enjoy your holiday on this magical island.
Downstairs the spacious accommodation extends to a large kitchen/diner, well-equipped for all your catering needs; a utility/boot room with washer and dryer, a cosy lounge with woodburner and a games room with table football and TV. Both the lounge and kitchen look directly out to sea.
Upstairs there are two sea-facing bedrooms, one with a kingsize bed and the other with a super-king bed and a third twin bedroom at the rear. A fold out single bed in the family room provides added flexibility for families and groups. All towels and bed linen are provided. There are two bathrooms, one with shower only and the second with a bath and over bath shower and a downstairs WC.
Outside there is a small garden space with table and private parking for 1 large car or two small cars. Alternative public parking is available nearby.
Bookings are for a minimum of three nights, all year round.
A superb location in the ‘capital of Skye’
Portree is Skye’s main town and is home to a whole range of cafes, shops and restaurants, all within a short walk of the house. In the summer months wander down the pier and you’ll find Just Hooked, which sells fresh seafood straight off the boats or you can choose to take one of the many excellent boat trips which take you to see the eagles, seals and other wildlife. Peek inside a pub or two at the weekend and you’ll often find there are musicians playing a Scottish reel or two. If you want to stretch your legs then a walk from the door around the peninsula or up the Meall and you’ll have stunning views across to Raasay and the Cuillins. And if you fancy venturing further afield then Portree is a superb base to visit everything Skye has to offer.
